An insulated garage door has a foam core between two skins rather than a single sheet of steel or aluminium. In most towns people buy one for temperature. In Kempton Park the first reason is usually noise, and it is the single most requested upgrade we sell here.

Aircraft noise, and what an insulated door actually does
We will be accurate about this rather than overclaim. An insulated sectional door with full perimeter seals will not soundproof a room, but it is markedly better than a single-skin panel with a gap under it, and on a converted garage under the approach through Bonaero Park, Rhodesfield or Aston Manor the difference is easily noticeable. Two things do the work: the mass of the panel, and the seal all the way round. A thick panel with a poor seal underperforms a modest panel that is properly sealed.
Seals matter as much as the core
An insulated panel with a fifteen-millimetre gap under it is a compromised door acoustically and thermally. Bottom, side and head seals are part of the specification rather than an accessory, and on a noise job they are the first thing we get right.
Garages that have become rooms
Converted garages are common here, and where the space is a gym, an office, a studio or a flatlet the door is the largest uninsulated surface in the room and it usually faces the sun as well as the approach. An insulated panel with proper seals changes that space more than anything else the same money would buy.
Quieter in its own operation
A foam-cored panel is far more rigid than a single skin, so it does not drum and it does not flex against its rollers. In a household where somebody sleeps during the day, the door being quiet to open matters as much as what it keeps out.

If the garage is attached to the house, has been converted into a room, or has a bedroom above it — yes, clearly. If it is a detached garage storing a car and a lawnmower, the money is better spent on a heavier gauge or better locking.
Our standard sectional door uses a 40mm section with a rigid polyurethane core bonded to both skins. Because the foam bonds rather than sits loose, the section is stiffer than a single sheet of the same weight and does not drum.
Noticeably, in both directions: the boom of the door itself and traffic noise off the street. It is often the real reason people upgrade when there is a bedroom over the garage.
Low-headroom track kits recover part of the requirement. Beyond that a sectional door will not fit, and we get part of the benefit with an insulated roll-up curtain and heavier perimeter sealing instead. Measure lintel to ceiling and send us the number.
